- Using the Program Practice.
-
- This program is designed to use predesigned questions to help
- students learn and review material from any discipline. The
- questions, hints, and answers are prepared by using the program
- "tutor" which can be obtained along with a registered copy of
- Practice, for $10 plus $2 for shipping and handling. This fee
- gives the purchaser a site license for both programs. See the file
- Register.doc which accompanies this program. Two sample groups of
- question files are included with this program, cellular.dat and
- mc1.dat. Cellular.dat is a file designed for biology students.
- No hints were included with this file. MC1.dat is a multiple
- choice file design for chemistry students which does include
- hints. The program "Tutor" can be used to make questions
- with or without hints.
-
- Requirements:
- This program runs on any IBM compatible machine from an 8086
- up. It will also run on any monitor.
-
- Installation:
- The program can be installed by copying all files provided
- onto a hard drive or a floppy disk. A directory should be created
- for all the files. If you know nothing about computers then type
- the word "install" at the system prompt and a directory
- (C:\Practice) will be created for you automatically with all
- necessary files copied to that directory.
-
- Running the program:
- To run the program type in the word practice. A desktop will
- appear with the word Questions in the upper left hand corner. To
- access this menu either click the mouse on questions or hold down
- the Alt key and press q. This will drop down the menu. The number
- in the upper right hand corner is the amount of heap space left.
- This means nothing unless it gets very small.
-
- Initialize:
- Choose this item when running the program for the first time.
- This will ask you for a name, first and last. Use the tab key to
- move from box to box and then click on OK. A file will be created
- which will store information regarding the use of the program.
-
- Start:
- Starts the program by presenting the user with a file dialog
- box containing question files available. The sample files included
- with this disk can be assessed by clicking on the item and then
- choosing OK or pressing Alt-F to access the file list box. Use the
- arrow keys to highlight the file you want and then choose OK. You
- may move around any dialog box with the mouse or tab key. When you
- register the program and create your own question files using the
- program Tutor any new files you design will be included in these
- boxes.
- After choosing start the question will appear in the upper
- left hand corner, a hint box will be in the upper right hand
- corner, and the answer box appears at the bottom of the screen.
- The questions will be presented in a different order each time the
- program is run. Students in a computer lab working on the same set
- of questions will get the questions in a different order.
- Questions answered correctly previously will not be presented.
- When a student has answered all of the questions correctly the
- program will notify him. See Answer box below for the use of the
- answer box.
-
- Print Results:
- Will print out the results for the student who has initialized
- the program. Time spent on each file along with every entry the
- student made during each session will be included on the printed
- report. This makes the student accountable for all work done.
-
- Reset:
- Resets all work done.
-
- Exit:
- Quits the program.
-
- Answerbox:
- The answer box is where the student can enter an answer, ask
- for hints, ask for the answer, skip a question, scroll the hint box
- up or down, or quit. When completed the student must choose Quit
- in order for the work she has done to be stored by the computer.
- To go from place to place either use the mouse or the tab key. The
- arrow keys can change the Option choices. Click on OK when ready.
- If the student wants to place an answer in the box tab to the
- answer box until the flashing cursor appears and type in the
- answer. Choose OK and the computer will indicate whether the
- answer is correct or not. If not correct and hints exist a hint
- will be presented in the upper right hand hint box. Every time the
- student makes a choice from the Answer box it will be recorded and
- saved to disk when Quit is chosen.
-
- The program has context sensitive help which can be obtained
- by pressing the F1 key.
